What a wonderful day for the Sharks and their faithfull supporters! They beat the Bulls 14-9 to win the coveted trophy after a 12 year drought.

The Bulls’ captain Victor Matfield said: “The Sharks were awesome. They were really motivated in front of that fantastic crowd.”

The Sharks scored two wonderful tries, the first by Ruan Pienaar and the second by Francois Steyn, but this was a real team effort. If one considers that the referee wanted to send Francois off to the blood  bin as he had blood on his face, but he stood his man and asked the referee to allow him to take the penalty kick before going to the blood bin. The referee allowed him to take the kick, which he missed, but the Sharks managed to get the ball during that movement and Francois ended up scoring the try, only then did he go to have his face seen to.

Frederic Michalak the French player who joined the Sharks for the season had the following to say about the occassion:

“Durban and the Sharks have changed my life,”

“South Africans of all cultures, black, white, English and Afrikaans, opened their hearts to me. My time here has been very special indeed. I was very anxious to repay the Sharks by making a good contribution in the final.”

“There is no place like this in rugby,” Michalak said, pointing to the celebrations on the outer fields. “I am just so happy that I could experience this.”

Michalak said the occasion of the Currie Cup final was probably the finest he had experienced in rugby.

Michalak turned in an assured performance as he emulated his compatriot Thierry Lacroix by wearing the number 10 jersey in a Sharks’ Currie Cup win.

One of my favourite players, Stefan Terblanche, had a wonderful game and I just wonder why he was left out of the Springbok squad once again, he has such flair for the game and did not falter under the high up and unders he was bombarded with all afternoon. Look howmany times he was nearly taken out by the Bulls players, but he just got up and continued as if nothing happened to him. Well done Stefan, there is many a rugby supporter who is sad not to see your name on the Springboks list.

Belated congrats to Sharks. An exciting game. While they haven’t yet exactly changed my life, they have piqued my interest in the sport. Yo. :)
