USA CELEBRATES HUGE SOCCER UPSET June 25, 2009

Brilliant tactics helped the United States pull off a stunning 2-0 win over Spain and reach the Confederations Cup final, something coach Bob Bradley described as huge.

A first-half strike from Villarreal’s Jozy Altidore and another 16 minutes from time by Fulham’s Clint Dempsey did the damage on Wednesday in what will go down as one of the biggest victories in US football history.

Crime, vuvuzelas and the Confed Cup - what’s your take?

They also had a flawless performance by Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard and a commendable defensive display to thank for earning them a shot at the trophy on Sunday against either Brazil or hosts South Africa.

“When you play Spain you certainly have to work very hard as a group to defend. We made a special point to close down Xavi as best we could to prevent his penetrative passes,” said Bradley.

“We felt strongly that when we got the ball we needed to be aggressive and have the confidence that we could keep the ball and move it.

SPRINGBOKS WIN THE FIRST TEST 26 - 21 June 21, 2009

Well done Springboks you once again made us proud with the win over the British and Irish Lions! The first half was spectacular with the wonderful rolling mauls from our pack of forwards.

Springbok flanker Heinrich Brussow scored on home debut and captain John Smit also collected a try which was wonderful as this was his first test against the Lions. The half time score was 26-7.

Bok coach Pieter de Villiers and his assistants must have then decided that they had a big enough lead to try out other combinations when they pulled off the backbone of their team in John Smit, Fourie du Preez, Bakkies Botha and Jean de Villiers.

This move could have backfired badly if they had lost the game, but the Boks hung on to win the game. The problem now is that we still do not know how strong our team really is because the second combination held the Lions onslaught, but did not score in the second half.

Hopefully the coach will pick the BEST team for the second test next Saturday and will allow them to play the full 80 minutes, bar injury! Once we have won TW#O tests then we can afford to play around with other combinations!

Well done to “The Beast” for the Man of the Match award, you deserved it!

BULLS VICTORIOUS IN RUGBY SUPER 14 FINAL May 31, 2009

The Bulls scored 8 tries to win the match with a final score of 61 -17 and by any terms you can say that, that was a “thrashing”.

Bulls captain Victor Matfield said that Saturday evening was “the best night of my life” after his side defeated the Chiefs to clinch the Super 14 trophy in the Final at Loftus Versfeld. The sea of blue that was evident around the stadium must have given the home team such encouragement that their adrenalin would have been pumping when they ran onto the field.

It is the biggest winning margin in a Final, by the proverbial country mile - the 44-point margin beating the 30 points (36-6) win the Brumbies posted over the Sharks in 2001. The 61 points also smashed the 47 points posted by the Brumbies in the 2004 Final.

It was the first home Final for the Bulls - who also won the title in 2007, defeating the Sharks in Durban - and Matfield thanked their fans for the support they had given them this week.Matfield also gave credit to the Chiefs in their first Super 14 final. He said they had shown a lot of character and that the away conditions had played a big part in their disappointing performance.

One can imagine what the Chiefs must have felt like when THEY ran onto the playing field to be greeted by the sea of blue in the stands.Chiefs coach Ian Foster was clearly gutted - he admitted as much - but said they hadn’t expected to be handed such a hiding by the home team.

Another record is Morné Steyn, with a Super 14 record of 11 drop-goals in a season - having kicked one in the Final.

There was nothing of the fluke about this, no lucky bounce, no questionable decision. It was simply a massive victory and the place to be on Saturday night was Pretoria and the colour to wear was blue. Even the newly elected President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, was there and he wore a blue jersey.

The Bulls beat the Crusaders 36 - 23 thereby getting a home final against the Chiefs!

Well done Bulls, what a game you played one would have thought it was the final the way you guys played. The Crusaders came at you so strongly in the first 20 minutes of the game that it looked as if they were the stronger team and on the way to a win…..but you guys have the great South African playing hearts and came through beautifully.

It is always difficult to pick out individuals to praise in such a great game, but I think that I must just say how wonderful Pierre Spies played, he was a powerhouse and made many wonderful breaks to put his team on the front foot.

Then I have to praise Morne Steyn who kept his team in front with the 4 drop goals he placed through the poles, it brought back memories of the time when Naas Botha played for the Blue Bulls and slotted so many drop goals. Well done Morne!

Scorers

Bulls
Tries - Bryan Habana, Akona Ndungane, Pierre Spies
Pen -Morne Steyn
Con - Morne Steyn 3
Drop - Morne Steyn 4

Crusaders
Tries - Adam Whitelock,Kieran Read
Pen - Stephen Brett, Leon MacDonald
Con - Leon MacDonald 2
Drop -Andy Ellis
The Crusaders have been Super 14 champions 7 times already and it is sad not to see them in the final, but every South African rugby fan does admire their game.
It is going to be a great final at Loftus in Pretoria next Saturday and I wish the Bulls all the success and hope they achieve their dream.

South African athlete Ernst Van Dyk won the Boston Marathon for the eighth time in the men’s wheelchair race. He did not beat his own record set in 2004, in fact this was his slowest time of all eight of his wins, but as we say here: “A win is a win!” Maybe he did not have enough competition to set a record. His World Best Time for the marathon was 1:18.27 (2004).

Van Dyk extended his own record for victories in the men’s wheelchair division and matched women’s wheelchair racer American Jean Driscoll’s record for most Boston Marathon victories ever.

Well done Ernst you have done us proud and we look forward to your 9th win next year!

Paralympic gold for Oscar today! Oscar came from behind and and snatched gold from United States’ Jerome Singleton during the finals of the Men’s 100m T44 race.  Oscar seemed to be out of the race after a slow start on the wet track, but he powered down the staight and pulled off the win! The runner in the photo with him is United States’ Marlon Shirley.

Oscar won a legal battle in May for the right to run in the Beijing Olympics against able-bodied athletes. However, he failed to meet the qualifying time in the 400m, but he is setting his sights on the London 2012 Olympics!

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius, left, and United States' Marlon Shirley race during the finals of the Men's 100m T44 race in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games held in Beijing Tuesday, Sep. 9, 2008. Pistorius took gold with a time of 11.17 seconds.

Well done Oscar, all the best for the 200m and 400m races!

Words can hardly describe the awesome opening ceremony held today at the Beijing Birds-nest stadium. The sounds, sights, dancing, music and firework displays were beyond description.

I really liked the 29 footsteps depicted with fireworks “walking” across the night sky of Beijing.

Fireworks of the opening ceremony                Fireworks of the opening ceremony

Well done Beijing/China, you outdid yourselves and the world watched in awe as you showed us so many different faces of your country and its people’s, all 56 different ethnic groups!

I learnt so much today just from this opening ceremony and I know that a new benchmark has been set for others to try and emulate or better in the future.

I managed to get these photo’s off the net

A general view is seen The Olympic rings are illuminated Spectators get into the National Stadium

Now let the games begin!!!

SPRINGBOKS HISTORIC WIN OVER ALL BLACKS July 13, 2008

What a game! When these two rugby greats meet it is always a thrill to watch because both teams have an intense desire to beat their rivals.

The “House of Pain” has been just that for the Springbok rugby team for the past 87 years, that was when last they were able to beat the All Blacks in Dunedin!

It was a cliffhanger right to the end and the whole of South Africa was sitting on the edge of their seats during the last few minutes of the game, we were ahead 30-28 and HAD to hold on to win! Our boys did not disappoint us and at long last we had a win at this venue.

Sometimes a team does need an individual spark from one its players and Ricky Januarie (scrumhalf) reminded us of the great Joost van der Westhuizen when his touch of brilliance resulted in the winning try being scored by him in the 75th minute of the gaime.

We have now ended the All Blacks world record run of 30 home test victories in a row. The world champs showed their true grit and that is how we know them.

Well done Boks we are so proud of you, now keep up the winning streak again when you meet the Wallabies!

SPRINGBOKS WIN 43-17 AGAINST WALES 2008 June 8, 2008

Wonderful win, well done Springboks! A convincing win of 43 - 17 over the Six Nations champions Wales.

Our young players did themselves proud and it was also wonderful to see our RWC players on the field giving their all as usual.

Coach Peter de Villiers said he could not have expected a more satisfactory result in his first match at the helm of the Spingboks.

Wales coach Warren Gatland said he was embarrassed by elements of his team’s performance in the 43-17 defeat at the hands of the Springboks in Bloemfontein

A special moment for our captain John Smit who earned his 50th cap as captain for the Springboks a wonderful achievement!

Now we can look forward to the 2nd test next Saturday.
