POTHOLES IN SOUTH AFRICA - JOKE June 4, 2009
Posted by frostygirl in Uncategorized.add a comment
There are so many potholes in the roads of most towns in South Africa that there is a new joke about it:
If motorists drive their vehicles on the correct side of the road and drive “straight” i.e. on their side of the road, they are stopped for drunken driving….why?
If you were sober you would be driving your vehicle all over the road trying to miss the potholes, therefore if you are driving straight you must be drunk because you drive over/through the potholes in the road!

BULLS VS CHIEFS IN SUPER 14 RUGBY FINAL May 24, 2009

The Bulls beat the Crusaders 36 - 23 thereby getting a home final against the Chiefs!
Well done Bulls, what a game you played one would have thought it was the final the way you guys played. The Crusaders came at you so strongly in the first 20 minutes of the game that it looked as if they were the stronger team and on the way to a win…..but you guys have the great South African playing hearts and came through beautifully.
It is always difficult to pick out individuals to praise in such a great game, but I think that I must just say how wonderful Pierre Spies played, he was a powerhouse and made many wonderful breaks to put his team on the front foot.
Then I have to praise Morne Steyn who kept his team in front with the 4 drop goals he placed through the poles, it brought back memories of the time when Naas Botha played for the Blue Bulls and slotted so many drop goals. Well done Morne!
Scorers
Tries - Bryan Habana, Akona Ndungane, Pierre Spies
Pen -Morne Steyn
Con - Morne Steyn 3
Drop - Morne Steyn 4
Tries - Adam Whitelock,Kieran Read

CRIME IN SOUTH AFRICA May 6, 2009

The crime in SA has caused a lot of us to be very nervous in our own homes, we have surrounded ourselves with high fences and try and take as many precautions as we can so that we do not become a victim of crime.
Our police force is stretched to the hilt so we tend not to place too much reliance on a quick response from them when we need help.
I have stumbled upon a wonderful system called Home911 that is available just here in SA and is aimed at people who are at home and need a security system that does not cost the earth and does not involve the police.
Basically it was a system some farmers thought out to help each other in remote areas and it was so successful, so popular and simple that they decided to make it available to the whole of SA. All you need is your cell phone which acts as your “panic button” and when you press a button on your cell phone it sends an sms to up to 10 people you preselect who all receive an immediate sms stating that you need help and they then take the necessary action to assist you.
The beauty of this system is that it only costs R75pm and with it comes a wonderful income making opportunity for all of you who have been looking to supplement your monthly income in this economic downturn we are in.
It has been up and running for some time now and is really worth the 5 minutes it takes to visit their website. Please go to: http://www.home911.co.za?dc=100548

BIGGEST THATCH IN THE WORLD? May 1, 2009

Is this the biggest thatch in the world? Hennie van Rensburg, CEO of Maranata Grasdakke, is waiting for the Guiness Book of World Records to verify whether it is!
In the small town of Christiana, next to the Vaal River, in the North West Province of South Africa, Protea Hotel Nkolo Spa commissioned the Maranata Grasdakke Company to build this mammoth thatch roof for their multi-million Rand hotel complex. The statistics are mind-boggling, try and imagine the following:
8 330 square meters of thatched roofing
546 000 bundles of thatching grass
59 000 bundles of Cape Reed
300 tons of poles to support the roof
288 km of thatching twine
61 km of wire sways
3 600 meters of threaded rods
1 900 liters of varnish
Average weight of 110 kg’s per square meter
Slope of the thatch at the rear of the hotel is 22 meters in length
It took eight months to complete the roof and the hotel had to close for a year to complete the makeover. They carried the thatch look inside as well and the restaurant has thatched canopies as part of their décor over the windows and the self-catering area.
This resort is absolutely wonderful and is suitable for family holidays with its own put- put golf course, outdoor chess, three outdoor swimming pools to suit all ages and a huge building which houses a wellness center that features natural heated mineral water (spa) with all the treatments, beauty salon, sauna, steam bath and Jacuzzis to pamper yourself.
This is definitely worth a visit if you are traveling by road on the N12 treasure route highway between Gauteng and Cape Town. Their food is good and reasonably priced and you can sample some of South Africa’s wonderful wines in splendid surroundings. For the bird lovers, of the feathered kind, there is quite a variety to be seen. If you like fishing bring your tackle with because you will have over 20 km’s of fishing sites along the Vaal River.
Situated in a game reserve in the lush, secluded surroundings on the banks of the Vaal River, built around a natural mineral spring. The game reserve stretches over 2300 hectares and is well stocked with game including white rhino, zebra, giraffe and a selection of antelope species abound here. The resort re-settled the first rhinos in the Free State.

Mathys Roets will be able to play his guitar and, if his lungs remain uninfected, will be able to sing if he desires to do so, that is the good news that all his fans wanted to hear. The doctors say that he is a paraplegic, after his T11 and T12 vertebrae were broken in the accident, but I believe there is always hope, depending on the individual’s inner strength and beliefs.
Mathys is receiving support from his family and has received so many well wishes from his fans and friends therefore he will know for sure that he is important to many people.
With his wonderful voice he has sung many different types of songs, including some Leonard Cohen, Neil Diamond and Roger Whittaker songs. He has such a restful type of voice that it touches your heart when you hear it.
I hope you will live your life to the fullest despite this setback Mathys

CONGO LURES SA FARMERS WITH FREE LAND April 17, 2009

Congo lures SA farmers with free land, Zimbabwe and South African governments can learn from this.
Johannesburg - In the biggest land deal in recent African history, the Republic of Congo has sent a delegation of five farmers to South Africa for talks with the South African farm union AgriSA, about the offer of 10-million hectares of farmland to South African farmers.
AgriSA said the government of the country, also known as Congo Brazzaville, wanted to improve food security.
Until now, Congo - which like the bigger Democratic Republic of Congo has been beset by political and ethnic tension in recent years - has had to import 99 percent of its food, mainly from France, Theo de Jager, deputy president of AgriSA, said.
The South African farmers would be able to lease the land for free for 99 years, De Jager said. Other enticements include a five-year “holiday” on corporate tax and the dismantling of taxes on the import of agricultural inputs, such as seeds, fertiliser and machines, De Jager said.
The farmers will be allowed to take all their profits out of the country and, although the project is being billed a food security initiative, are under no obligation to sell their output on the domestic market.

KAI’S SOCCER BENIFIT FAILS March 24, 2009
Posted by frostygirl in Uncategorized.1 comment so far
Kai is a two year old boy who was born prematurely and due to the negligence of the medical staff at the hospital Kai suffered brain damage due to lack of oxygen. Kai’s mother did not realise that something was wrong with him until he was about nine months old when she observed that his motor skills where defective.
After numerous tests she was told that Kai woud be lame from below his arms and would therefore never be able to walk or even sit up on his own.
His family did a lot of research and found out that a doctor in Germany had good results with stem cell treatment, whereby he uses the persons OWN stem cells to treat them.
Now for the main story…..a friend of hers promised to arrange a soccer benefit day for Kai in London to raise the $12000 for the treatment. This was a wonderful gesture and a few weeks ago she contacted this friend to make sure that all was in order so that she could make the appointment with the doctor in Germany and pay for the flights and hotel accommodation. Her friend assured her that everything was on track and that she coud go ahead with her plans.
Everything is set for June 2009, after numerous tests the doctor confirmed that Kai was accepted, the plane tickets and hotel accommodation has been booked and paid for.
Now for the crunch……her friend has let her down, as far as she knows he has not booked the soccer benefit and is now avoiding all her calls, he does not even have the decency to contact her to advise her what the position is.
Now at this late stage she is in an absolute quandry, she cannot afford the $12000 for the medical treatment and if she cancels she does not know if Kai will be accepted at a later stage and she will also lose money on her air tickets and hotel accommodation.
I am hoping that someone out there may be able to help her, if so please leave your details in the comment section and I will contact you to let you have her details.
Please open your hearts to this young mother!

MORE ON SUBJECT “PEOPLE OF COLOUR” March 15, 2009

A little fun here in answer to Relax Max’s comment on coloured people. (No disrespect intended to President Obama we love our “coloured” people here as they have a wonderful sense of humour!)
I saw the following post on the AfricanCrisis blog I normally follow and it is quite funny that I came across this just after I posted the “People of Colour” story earlier. I have copied the post here for ease of reference.
[Humor] If American President Obama came from Cape Town, South Africa…
You Americans may have fooled yourselves into believing that Obama is “black”, nobody in South Africa is fooled. If one of your parents is white and the other is black, you’re a COLOURED. That’s the South African definition. Obama is a coloured, and South Africa’s coloureds live mostly in the Cape.
The coloureds in South Africa also have a rather strange habit. They pull out their front teeth. Someone edited the photo below to show what Obama would look like if his teeth were pulled out. He’d look exactly like a Cape Coloured.
The Cape coloureds also speak Afrikaans. The Afrikaans caption below reads: “Yes, you larnies (upperclass folk) never thought that I’d make it!”

PEOPLE OF COLOUR! March 13, 2009
Posted by frostygirl in Uncategorized.Tags: black, colour, people
1 comment so far
I wonder who first thought up the phrase “people of colour” to describe people who are non-white, as far as I know “white” is also a colour! (May be the same person who called South Africa the “rainbow” nation, but forgot that the colour “black” does not feature in a rainbow!)
So why call some people “people of colour”?
Here in South Africa I was rebuked for calling our KZN female Judge, Leone, “black” as apparently she is “coloured”, but in the NEW South Africa everyone would rather be called “black” so that they can qualify for jobs and other perks in the country. Even the Chinese South Africans have been given “black” status in South Africa even though they are “whiter” than I am!!!
So to summarise:
If you are white (European) then you are white.
If you are white (SA Chinese) then you are black.
If you are black you are either black or a person of colour.
If you are coloured then you are either black, or coloured or a person of colour.
If you are Indian in SA you are Asian or black.
Very confusing, what? Have a left someone out?
