Recently the University of Leeds announced that one of their spin-off companies, Xeros, is commercialising a process of washing (and dry-cleaning) clothes, first developed by researchers at the university.
Plastic granules are put into the machine with the clothes to remove dirt. Tests have shown that they remove stains as effectively as normal washing methods and clothes are left as fresh. They estimate the new method will use less than 2% of the water and energy of a conventional machine, and of course there is no need for a tumble dryer. They are hoping it will be available in 2009.
Presumably there will be no need for a fabric conditioner, nor will you be hanging the clothes on an outdoor line, so I’m wondering how fresh is “as fresh”? Nevertheless, the saving in water and electricity will make it very, very attractive.
They believe the process can also be used for dry-cleaning, removing the need for harmful solvents which are linked to certain types of cancer, a great step in improving safety.
How will the soap manufacturers react? Will they be offering to supply a bar of soap to the developing world if we buy 10 packets of washing powder?

CHINA IGNORED NATURES WARNING May 16, 2008

It is always interesting to see how scientists react to warnings they receive from nature about forthcoming disasters, or should I rather say, how they don’t react!
You may remember that the animals behaved erratically when the tsunami was on the way to the Indonesian Islands. Apparently the same thing happened just before the Chinese earthquake and the scientists who said it was nothing were killed in the quake.

TROTS AFRIKAANS ! May 13, 2008

Although the heading is in Afrikaans I am going to write this post in English so that more South Africans can understand its contents.
It saddens me very much when I hear how the Afrikaans language has been bastardised by Afrikaners who say that they are “Proudly Afrikaans.”
When you listen to them speaking they can hardly complete a sentence without using an “English” word or phrase in it. Why? Pure laziness! If you are proudly Afrikaans you should speak the pure language.
Next time you watch television and you see the following people being interviewed listen carefully:
1) Rassie Erasmus, the Stormers rugby coach, in every sentence he uses “English” words and he is an Afrikaner. Now what amazed me is that when they interviewed Dick Muir, the sharks rugby coach, he spoke fluent Afrikaans without a word of English and I am sure his first language is English. Well done Dick Muir what a wonderful example!
2) Steve Hofmeyr our most popular Afrikaans singer, wow! His songs, his interviews, his chat shows, everything he says and does has this bastardised language, what a shame, he should be an example to all the Afrikaners!
3) Most of our South African artist are just as guilty as Steve, I have heard all of the following doing exactly the same: Patricia Lewis, Jannie Moolman, Theuns Jordaan, Nicholis Louw, Dozi, I can go on and on here, one example of this is that they all use the word “song” instead of “lied”.
The one well known person in this country who truly shows that he is proud to be Afrikaans is Nikki van den Berg a presenter on Radio Sonder Grense (RSG), I have never heard him bastardise Afrikaans, in fact he goes out of his way to use different Afrikaans words from the norm to try and educate the Afrikaner Nation. We can all learn from him and follow his example.
I know that every language does sometimes adopt words from other language groups, for example the Afrikaans word “lekker” is used by our English-speaking people because it is such a descriptive word, but they certainly do not bastardise there language by using an Afrikaans word in every sentence.
I am challenging the Afrikaners to clean up their act and start speaking Afrikaans properly and I am challenging the artists in this country to stop using English words in their Afrikaans songs, their interviews, their stage performances and their daily lives.
Let us help each other by correcting each other when we hear someone using an English word, it can be done if we all work together at it.

PREAMBLE TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONSTITUTION May 9, 2008

I have copied the preamble to our constitution and show it below and if we look back to 1996 what a wonderful promise this held for ALL South Africans!
It is such a shame that the Government failed to make this a FACT in South Africa. Read the contents and then look at the news and newspapers; talk to the people and see if they think that the contents of the preamble have been achieved.
This is only the “preamble” what about the rest of the Constitution?
From time to time I will post other excerpts and see how we faired with them.
I would welcome comments on this!

THREE DISADVANTAGES OF LIVING IN SA May 7, 2008

The high crime rate in South Africa, mainly in the cities, but also the white farmers being attacked and brutally killed, is a definite disadvantage to ALL South Africans. The ANC Government cannot control it because of an inadequate police force, legal system and judiciary system, which they have allowed to deteriorate by sidelining the skilled white workers and replacing them with untrained black workers. The rapidly deteriorating services provided by the ANC Government and Municipalities, i.e.:
-
Our drinking water quality is beyond BAD, it is absolutely awful and causes many people to die from the bacteria, etc in the water.
-
Our roads are full of potholes because they are not being maintained and repaired regularly.
-
Our health service has broken down and it is actually dangerous to go to a government hospital because you may die there from lack of care, lack of clean environment and lack of skills.
If you are white you cannot get a decent job in South Africa as reverse Apartheid is now practised by the black majority, even after 14 years in power.

We are far away from the Northern industrial pollution nations therefore our air is a bit cleaner than it is in China, India, USA, UK, Europe, etc.
When World War 3 breakes out we will be one of the countries that will be the furtherest away from the hotspot.
We have Rugby, braaivleis and Boeremusiek to make our lives very happy in our land!

TB IN SOUTH AFRICA April 23, 2008

Just a short post on the African mindset on extreme resistant TB.
The health authorities have warned the people about the dangers of contamination and that all people suffering from the extreme resint TB virus has to be hospitalized and remain under strict quarantine to avoid further spread of the disease.
So what do these patients do? The break out of a secure facility they are housed in and go home to visit their families for “Easter” and could not care at all that they might be spreading the germ to their family and thereby signing their death warrants.
