CRIME IN SOUTH AFRICA May 6, 2009

The crime in SA has caused a lot of us to be very nervous in our own homes, we have surrounded ourselves with high fences and try and take as many precautions as we can so that we do not become a victim of crime.
Our police force is stretched to the hilt so we tend not to place too much reliance on a quick response from them when we need help.
I have stumbled upon a wonderful system called Home911 that is available just here in SA and is aimed at people who are at home and need a security system that does not cost the earth and does not involve the police.
Basically it was a system some farmers thought out to help each other in remote areas and it was so successful, so popular and simple that they decided to make it available to the whole of SA. All you need is your cell phone which acts as your “panic button” and when you press a button on your cell phone it sends an sms to up to 10 people you preselect who all receive an immediate sms stating that you need help and they then take the necessary action to assist you.
The beauty of this system is that it only costs R75pm and with it comes a wonderful income making opportunity for all of you who have been looking to supplement your monthly income in this economic downturn we are in.
It has been up and running for some time now and is really worth the 5 minutes it takes to visit their website. Please go to: http://www.home911.co.za?dc=100548

BIGGEST THATCH IN THE WORLD? May 1, 2009

Is this the biggest thatch in the world? Hennie van Rensburg, CEO of Maranata Grasdakke, is waiting for the Guiness Book of World Records to verify whether it is!
In the small town of Christiana, next to the Vaal River, in the North West Province of South Africa, Protea Hotel Nkolo Spa commissioned the Maranata Grasdakke Company to build this mammoth thatch roof for their multi-million Rand hotel complex. The statistics are mind-boggling, try and imagine the following:
8 330 square meters of thatched roofing
546 000 bundles of thatching grass
59 000 bundles of Cape Reed
300 tons of poles to support the roof
288 km of thatching twine
61 km of wire sways
3 600 meters of threaded rods
1 900 liters of varnish
Average weight of 110 kg’s per square meter
Slope of the thatch at the rear of the hotel is 22 meters in length
It took eight months to complete the roof and the hotel had to close for a year to complete the makeover. They carried the thatch look inside as well and the restaurant has thatched canopies as part of their décor over the windows and the self-catering area.
This resort is absolutely wonderful and is suitable for family holidays with its own put- put golf course, outdoor chess, three outdoor swimming pools to suit all ages and a huge building which houses a wellness center that features natural heated mineral water (spa) with all the treatments, beauty salon, sauna, steam bath and Jacuzzis to pamper yourself.
This is definitely worth a visit if you are traveling by road on the N12 treasure route highway between Gauteng and Cape Town. Their food is good and reasonably priced and you can sample some of South Africa’s wonderful wines in splendid surroundings. For the bird lovers, of the feathered kind, there is quite a variety to be seen. If you like fishing bring your tackle with because you will have over 20 km’s of fishing sites along the Vaal River.
Situated in a game reserve in the lush, secluded surroundings on the banks of the Vaal River, built around a natural mineral spring. The game reserve stretches over 2300 hectares and is well stocked with game including white rhino, zebra, giraffe and a selection of antelope species abound here. The resort re-settled the first rhinos in the Free State.

SWINE FLU HITS SOUTH AFRICA April 30, 2009

According to news reports there are two suspected swine flu cases in SA, but as usual our government department tells us not to worry about it. In fact their words were: “No need to panic.”
If they have that mindset what precautions are they taking to protect us from this virus?
They did not even keep the woman, who had travelled extensively in Mexico, in isolation they just gave her some medication and sent her home!
The World Health Organization has increased the pandemic level to stage 5 therefore they are taking it very seriously and so should everybody all over the world. Put all systems in place to avoid the spread of the virus and if someone is suspected of having the virus, isolate and treat them and insure that they do not spread it further.
We are now going into our winter months here in SA and the virus likes cold weather so that is something to bear in mind over the next few months.

MEXICAN SWINE FLU OUTBREAK SERIOUS April 26, 2009

The Mexican swine flu outbreak is being treated as very serious by the World Health Organization as although it is an “old” disease it has “new” symptoms and must be treated with great care and they have now declared it as stage three on the pandemic scale which is not a good sign.
At present over 80 people have died in Mexico and the disease has already spread to New York, California and New Zealand. Of course with the amount of air travel from an to Mexico the disease can rapidly spread to all countries if people do not take it seriously and take the necessary precautions.
Mexico have canceled all public events and have asked people to stay at home as much as possible and to wear masks over their mouths when they venture out in public. Many schools have been closed for a week to try and avoid a rapid spread among children.
What can you do to try and avoid catching this? When flu like symptoms start take it seriously and if you suspect that you have had contact with someone from Mexico recently go to your doctor and ask to be checked for swine flu. Wash your hands a lot and if you sneeze or cough do so into a tissue and dispose of it immediately.
Many people take the “flu” as something that they catch and will eventually get rid of and they may not take the necessary steps to avoid death from this silent killer. The symptoms are flu-like but diarrhea has been included on the list.
Over the next few days the WHO will monitor the situation and decide whether they will declare it a full pandemic or not.

Mathys Roets has undergone serious surgery to stabilise his vertebrae today and we are waiting to hear the outcome of the surgery and whether they were able to do something to help him to recover and be able to walk again. It is a wait and see situation at the moment.
Mathys said the following to Loraine Kalp a Voksblad reporter: “I’m strangely excited about what lies ahead for me. Thursday will be a very important day. I know the chances of recovery, the chances that I’ll be able to walk again, are very small. But there is still a chance.”
“I don’t want to ask too much, not medically, and not of people. But I do want to ask that people will think of me on Thursday, precisely for the reason that I believe it has been the thoughts and prayers of people which have carried me through the past couple of weeks,”
“If I were never able to walk again, then this will be the beginning of a new phase in my life. I’m alive, and I’m going to seize every single opportunity which comes my way.”
Well done Mathys that’s the spirit, remain strong and believe!

ERNST VAN DYK WINS BOSTON WHEELCHAIR MARATHON April 20, 2009

South African athlete Ernst Van Dyk won the Boston Marathon for the eighth time in the men’s wheelchair race. He did not beat his own record set in 2004, in fact this was his slowest time of all eight of his wins, but as we say here: “A win is a win!” Maybe he did not have enough competition to set a record. His World Best Time for the marathon was 1:18.27 (2004).
Van Dyk extended his own record for victories in the men’s wheelchair division and matched women’s wheelchair racer American Jean Driscoll’s record for most Boston Marathon victories ever.
Well done Ernst you have done us proud and we look forward to your 9th win next year!

NEW POTHOLE SOLUTION IMPORTED FROM UK April 19, 2009

Now I know why our government have decided to ignore the potholes on all our roads, someone must have visited Navestock, a small English village, and saw the great “success” they are having….read on!!!!
London - Here’s a new road repair plan: “don’t bother.”
Officials in the small English village of Navestock, 40km north-east of London, are considering leaving many of the town’s potholes unfilled as a way to curb speeding.
There’s another advantage as well: leaving the potholes alone is a lot cheaper than fixing them.
City councillor Mike Parrish said the plan would help return many of the town’s smaller roads to their original status as country lanes.
“It seems potholes are good on our quiet little back roads. Not fixing those might save us time and cost and also be a traffic-calming measure.”
Some residents have asked for speed bumps, but potholes would serve the same purpose, the councillor said. The plan would be to repair potholes on certain roads to encourage their use, while letting those on other roads serve as a deterrent.
Former policeman Roy Tyzack called it “ludicrous,” saying a pro-pothole policy would endanger motorists, cyclists, horse riders and the many elderly people who use the roads. - Sapa-AP

Mathys Roets will be able to play his guitar and, if his lungs remain uninfected, will be able to sing if he desires to do so, that is the good news that all his fans wanted to hear. The doctors say that he is a paraplegic, after his T11 and T12 vertebrae were broken in the accident, but I believe there is always hope, depending on the individual’s inner strength and beliefs.
Mathys is receiving support from his family and has received so many well wishes from his fans and friends therefore he will know for sure that he is important to many people.
With his wonderful voice he has sung many different types of songs, including some Leonard Cohen, Neil Diamond and Roger Whittaker songs. He has such a restful type of voice that it touches your heart when you hear it.
I hope you will live your life to the fullest despite this setback Mathys

CONGO LURES SA FARMERS WITH FREE LAND April 17, 2009

Congo lures SA farmers with free land, Zimbabwe and South African governments can learn from this.
Johannesburg - In the biggest land deal in recent African history, the Republic of Congo has sent a delegation of five farmers to South Africa for talks with the South African farm union AgriSA, about the offer of 10-million hectares of farmland to South African farmers.
AgriSA said the government of the country, also known as Congo Brazzaville, wanted to improve food security.
Until now, Congo - which like the bigger Democratic Republic of Congo has been beset by political and ethnic tension in recent years - has had to import 99 percent of its food, mainly from France, Theo de Jager, deputy president of AgriSA, said.
The South African farmers would be able to lease the land for free for 99 years, De Jager said. Other enticements include a five-year “holiday” on corporate tax and the dismantling of taxes on the import of agricultural inputs, such as seeds, fertiliser and machines, De Jager said.
The farmers will be allowed to take all their profits out of the country and, although the project is being billed a food security initiative, are under no obligation to sell their output on the domestic market.
