One of my Tswana friends came to visit and we were talking about the death rate amongst the black people in our small town in the Ree State and she made this statement: “There will be no more grandmothers left!”
That was a very profound statement coming from her and I asked her what she meant.
She explained that it was a custom amongst her people that when babies are born the grandmothers normally look after them, thereby allowing the mother of the child to go and work to send money back to the grandmother to pay towards the upkeep of the child.
She then explained that with the ever increasing deaths from HIV/AIDS and TB amongst the 25 - 45 year old people the present grandmothers are looking after the deceased mother’s children, but when those children grow up and have children of their own there will not be a grandpartent to look after them.
In other words a whole generation will be missing!
It is a startling fact to digest, we know that many children are already living together in vacant houses left by their deceased parents and grandparents and they have to fend for themselves. At times there are up to 15 children living in one small house.
A very sad story.

MICHELLE OBAMA…. “MY CHILDREN COME FIRST.” November 12, 2008

When I hear a woman say: “My children come first” I cannot believe it, that is why so many marriages fail.
The order in each woman’s life should be first her God, then her husband and then her children. If she does not ensure that her husband is happy, well looked after and fulfilled then she does not have a solid foundation for her marriage. If you have a happy husband you will also have a happy family life.
So many women concentrate too much on their children and their needs and they forget that their husbands also has needs.
As her husband will be President of USA Michelle will see less of him than they are both used to, so both of them will have to make time to spend together to keep the marriage strong.
I hope they wil find a good balance!
