HIV?

AIDS, TB, Cholera and various other diseases are busy decimating our population!

In a previous post I highlighted the fact that in our small town in the provence of Free State between 4 and 7 people were dying a week.

These statistics have now changed somewhat…. it has now increased to between 4 and 7 a DAY!

I spoke to a Tswana lady last week about this and she advised that MOST of the young black people in her area are sick and they seem to be dying very quickly after discovering that they are sick.

They will have to start the fourth graveyard in their area shortly! The previous one took less than a year to fill up.

So when you look and the photo above you can understand why they would be placing the sale of tombstones on their external advertising board outside a clothing shop.

One of my Tswana friends came to visit and we were talking about the death rate amongst the black people in our small town in the Ree State and she made this statement: “There will be no more grandmothers left!”

That was a very profound statement coming from her and I asked her what she meant.

She explained that it was a custom amongst her people that when babies are born the grandmothers normally look after them, thereby allowing the mother of the child to go and work to send money back to the grandmother to pay towards the upkeep of the child.

She then explained that with the ever increasing deaths from HIV/AIDS and TB amongst the 25 - 45 year old people the present grandmothers are looking after the deceased mother’s children, but when those children grow up and have children of their own there will not be a grandpartent to look after them.

In other words a whole generation will be missing!

It is a startling fact to digest, we know that many children are already living together in vacant houses left by their deceased parents and grandparents and they have to fend for themselves. At times there are up to 15 children living in one small house.

A very sad story.

HIV/AIDS ……MURDER OR MANSLAUGHTER? October 20, 2008

If a person is diagnosed HIV positive and then willingly has sex with another person without advising the person of his/her HIV status and also does not take preventative measures to ensure that the virus is not spread to the other person, should this person be charged with murder or manslaughter ?

The reason why I have been pondering this matter is because of the fact that here in South Africa there are millions of our black citizens who have been diagnosed HIV positive and are receiving treatment for this disease.

When they are questioned about their condom usage more than 70% say that they either “never” use condoms or that they “sometimes” use condoms. Their culture does not frown on multiple sex partners from a very young age, therefore if one person is infected they can infect countless others.

Maybe we should lobby for the offenders to be charged with murder or manslaughter if they infect innocent people in this way.

I know it will be difficult to prove who had sex with who, but maybe scare tactics could be used at all the clinics in the country who could then advise the HIV positive people that they “could” be prosecuted maybe they will then use the FREE condoms they have been given by the clinics!

If only!!! I can dream I suppose!

HIV/AIDS IN UNITED STATES August 3, 2008

The Centre for Disease Control in USA has receently revealed that there are more new cases of Americans infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, than previously believed.

About 56,000 people became infected with HIV in the past year, which translates to about 40 percent more cases than officials had estimated, said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention.

They now have technology that can determine when someone has been infected, this new method can indicate whether someone has been infected with HIV during the previous five months, rather than relying on statistical models.

“Diagnosis of HIV can occur years after infection. The fact that 56,000 Americans each year are contracting HIV for the first time is a wake-up call for all of us in the U.S.,” Fenton said.

“These numbers are a scathing indictment of how profoundly U.S. and CDC HIV prevention efforts have failed,” said Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which calls itself “the nation’s largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care.”

In terms of the HIV/AIDS figures in Africa the abovementioned new HIV/AIDS infected people in USA is very small, but it must be of great concern as one would expect that it would be easier to educate a first world country’s citizens than in our continent.

It is interesting to see the following report on HIV/AIDS amongst “Black” Americans:
